| CONTESTS IN THE ORAL READING OF LATIN AND GREEK |
Purpose:
To encourage students to acquire both facility and enjoyment in the
oral performance of works of Greek and Latin literature, all of which
were
originally created with the intention of their being performed orally
and
not read silently.
Prizes offered:
Format of the contests:
1. One set passage for all contestants:
a) Greek:Iliad, Book II, lines 182-210
b) Latin:Aeneid, Book IV lines 1-30
2. One passage chosen by the individual contestant (poetry or prose,
ca. 30 lines).
Contestants are requested to supply three photocopies of this
passage for the judges.
Evaluation Criteria:
1. Contestants will be judged on the consistency of pronunciation,
rhythmic clarity, and literary expressiveness.
2. Memorization of the performed text is optional and will not be a
criterion in the evaluation of the contestants.
(The judges reserve the right not to aware one or
more of the above prizes.)
Judges of the Contests:
The contests will have three judges, consisting of the Director of
the Oral Reading Contests of the New York Classical Club plus two
additional
judges selected by the Director.
Date and Location of the Contests:
Saturday, April 5, 2008 at 2:00 pm, 602 Hamilton Hall, Columbia
University (Main Campus Entrance on east side of Broadway and 116 St).
The contest is open, and any interested persons are welcome to
attend.

Students who wish to enter the oral reading contests
are requested to send the following information NO LATER THAN
29 MARCH 2008 to
