HISTORY:

On June 9, 1900, five classicists founded the "New York Latin Club" in order to provide a forum for individuals interested in classical antiquity to gather, exchange ideas, and sponsor lectures by distinguished classicists. Later christened the New York Classical Club, the organization gradually expanded its mission to include the promotion of Greek and Latin study in schools and colleges, using the resources of an endowment fund granted tax-exempt status in 1959 as the "New York Classical Club Greek and Latin Scholars Fund". One of the ways that the Club reached many young New Yorkers was by providing area schools with medals that could be awarded to students for excellence in Latin and Greek. In 1997, the Club became a not-for-profit corporation whose purposes, according to the by-laws, are the following:

to promote the development and maintain the well-being of classical studies
to provide opportunities for exchange of ideas and free discussion among lovers of classical learning
to provide learning opportunities both to members and to the general public
to improve teaching on the elementary, secondary, post-secondary and graduate levels in the classical fields
to establish and administer scholarships, fellowships and prizes in the classical disciplines.

Request for Information: Club historian Barbara McManus is seeking information about classics programs and curricula in NY metropolitan schools, colleges and universities at the turn of the century (c. 1900). She would appreciate copies of catalogue pages, program descriptions, etc. from that era or names (with email addresses or phone numbers) of people whom she might contact to obtain this information. She would also be grateful for NYCC documents or any other materials relating to the history of the Club since 1950 in order to augment the Club archives.

MEMBERSHIP:

The New York Classical Club welcomes anyone interested in classical antiquity, including students, teachers at all levels, and members of the community. Dues are very reasonable: $10.00 for regular membership, $5.00 for students and seniors, and $150.00 for a life membership. A printable membership form explains how to join. Club members are eligible for a special Centennial award, Rome/Athens scholarships, and Phyllis Winquist tuition assistance awards (see competitions and awards for details).
