AWARDS AND COMPETITIONS

ROME/ATHENS SUMMER SCHOLARSHIPS:

This is a special opportunity for Club members to win scholarships of $4,500 toward the cost of study in the summer session of the American Academy in Rome or the American School of Classical Studies at Athens. All members in the third consecutive year of paid membership in the Club are eligible to apply for the award, although preference will be given to secondary school teachers and graduate students. Interested individuals should obtain applications from the Academy or School, complete them, and send copies of all application materials by March 15 to Dr. Ethyle R. Wolfe, 360 West 22nd Street, #15E, New York, NY 10011. For more information about the summer programs, application procedures, and deadlines, consult the websites of the respective schools: American Academy in Rome, American School of Classical Studies at Athens.

PHYLLIS WINQUIST TUITION ASSISTANCE AWARDS: These awards are bestowed by the NYCC in honor of a master teacher, Phyllis Winquist, to support candidates who are taking courses to acquire or improve skills in teaching Latin or Ancient Greek in grades 7-12. Candidates must be paid members of the NYCC at the time of applying and during the twelve months of the funded period. They must either be teaching Classics in grades 7-12 or show clear indication of doing so in the near future. All application materials must be postmarked by March 1 and mailed to Donald Connor, 100 W. 92nd St. Apt 21F, New York, NY 10025. President's Grant: We are now accepting applications for the 2010 President's grant in support of projects promoting interest in classical antiquity in the New York area. Click here for an application (in *doc format). Submit project proposals (500-1000 words) with request amount to our President by Monday, March 1.

INFORMATION FOR SPRING 2010 CONTESTS!!

Every spring, the Club sponsors three contests to encourage and reward the study of Latin and Greek.

        High School Sight Translation:
Students from high schools compete in five divisions of Latin sight translations, each of which carries three prizes, now being determined.  The contest will take place on Thursday, 4 PM April 15th at the Regis School, 55 East 84th Street in Manhattan.   Please gather at the 2nd floor Conference Room between 3:30-4:00 PM. If you wish to participate, please contact Mr. Donald Conner by April 6, at 4 PM. The registrations can be done by email and should include the school name and the number of students competing in each division: i.e., Caesar 3, Cicero 0, Ovid 4, Vergil 2, and Horace 6, If you have any questions, or wish to register or proctor, please contact Donald Connor (donald.connor@trinityschoolnyc.org)

College Undergraduate Sight Translation: The New York Classical Club Undergraduate Greek and Latin translation examinations will be held on Friday, April 16 2010 2 PM at NYU, Department of Classics, Silver Center, 100 Washington Square East, (5th floor). Oral Reading Contests
will be held Saturday, 10 April, 2:30pm 602 Hamilton Hall, Columbia University ALL ARE WELCOME TO ATTEND

The purpose of this contest is to  encourage students to acquire both facility and enjoyment in the oral performance of works of Greek and Latin literature,   all of which were originally created with the intention of their being performed orally and not read silently.

Eligibility Competitions in the oral reading of Latin and Greek are also held, open to high school students, undergraduates and graduate students. Contestants may compete for both the Greek and Latin prizes, or for either one.  .

The Prizes
1.  The NY Classical Club Prizes for the Oral Reading of Greek: 1st--$300, 2nd--$200, 3rd--$100.
2.  The NY Classical Club Prizes for the Oral Reading of Latin: 1st--$300, 2nd--$200, 3rd--$100.

Format of the Contests
1.  One set passage for all contestants:
    a)  Greek: Iliad Book 2, lines 243-269
    b)  Latin: Aeneid, Book 4, lines 60-89
2.  One passage chosen by the individual contestant (poetry or prose, ca. 30 lines).  Contestants are requested to supply three photocopies of this passage for the judges.

Criteria for Judgment
1.  Contestants will be judged on the consistency of pronunciation, rhythmic clarity, and literary expressiveness.
2.  Memorization of the performed texts is optional and will not be a criterion in the evaluation of the contestants.
    (The judges reserve the right not to award one or more of the above prizes.)
